So as a lot of you know, I went to Florida this past week for my brother's wedding. Going back there got me to thinking...not about marriage and my future, but about my past. As a military brat, I've travelled a fair amount, and as such, I have no true 'home town'. There is no sense of belonging to a community for me. But when someone asks me 'Where are you from?', the answer that first springs to my mind is 'Florida'. Not 'California', not 'Maryland', not even 'Japan', where I was born. Now normally, when I move, that chapter of my life closes and I look back on it like it happened to someone else. I know I was there, and I remember all the details, but it still feels so detached. Whenever I return to Florida, I do feel like I'm coming back to something comforting and safe. I think going back and seeing all the people who shaped my life there reminds me that it was real and it did really happen. I don't know if anyone other than other military brats will get or understand any of this, but I had to write all of this down in an attempt to make some sense of it. I don't know if it worked.
